In New Zealand, where abalone is called pāua (from the Māori language), you have to be granted legal rights under Māori customary rights The legal recreational daily limit is 10 pāua per diver with a minimum shell length of 125 mm. No two shells are ever alike so there is a wide variation in colour and pattern between Paua even from the same location. Pāua are frequently used to represent the eyes in Māori carvings and traditionally are associated with the stars or whetū, the symbolic eyes of ancestors that gaze down from the night sky. The pāua is iconic in New Zealand.
